How to have kid-proof furniture (1/2)

Designer Darryl Carter says synthetic fabrics have come a long way and are the perfect answer for a family that wants stylish, child-friendly décor.

• Evolution
Synthetic fabrics have evolved considerably since your grandmother’s plastic slipcovers. Current synthetics can pass for the real thing with their supple hand, realistic graining and subtle patinas.

• Choices
the array of faux choices is virtually limitless, ranging from ostrich to basket-woven leathers to matte patents to powdery pastel Ultrasuedes. There is something suitable for any design type.
• Top Spots

Use synthetics for furniture in high-traffic areas, such as kitchen banquettes, family room sofas, or dining room chairs. They’re also perfect solutions for upholstered cubes or floor pillows in children’s play area.
• Easy Care

Most of the new textiles are not as porous as their genuine counterparts. Therefore they tend to have a higher stain resistance and can usually be spot-cleaned if done quickly. Many are machine-washable.
