How to have kid-proof furniture (2/2)

Designer Darryl Carter says synthetic fabrics have come a long way and are the perfect answer for a family that wants stylish, child-friendly décor.

• Borderline
Use durable faux-leathers on wood desktops with nailhead surrounds, leaving a two-to-three-inch border of wood exposed on the perimeter of the desk surface

• By the Book
Ultrasuede or faux-leather can add texture and interest as an interior backing in a bookcase. Also, a thin Ultrasuede can make a beautiful presentation as an alternative book jacket.

• On the Edge
Add a thick faux-suede decorative band to your sisal rug to complement your room’s color palette. The thinner Ultrasuedes add unexpected texture as a band on curtains or Roman shades.

• In the Drawer
For the pampered, synthetic textiles make great drawer liners. The pastels are ideal for a lady’s dressing room, while the burnished faux-leathers work well in a man’s dressing room.
